Stands! The last two
weeks we have looked at after season inventories as they related to deer using
your property and food sources on your property. This week we will focus on the
number one reason we at Advance see landowners burn out a property in the first
few weeks and sometimes even the first few days of hunting season. The culprit:
poor stand placement and a poor or non-existent hunting strategy concerning
those stands. At Advance, we advise all of our clients before they ever hang a
stand to try to determine where they think the deer are going to come from, and
what wind direction would then be best suited for that stand. The last thing we
ever want to do is have the deer doing exactly what we want them to do, i.e.
feeding in one of our planted food plots, while being downwind of us. We are
constantly amazed at how many clients do exactly that! They spend countless
hours and dollars getting their property ready for the season and then pay no
attention to the wind direction thus spooking, and worse educating the deer on
their property, then wondering why they go nocturnal or they never see
anything. If you are not hunting using the wind and thermals to your advantage
you are not going to be consistently successful and worse you are hindering
everyone else's chance for success. Always place stands where you can get into
and out of these locations without bumping a lot of deer. Our goal is to have
the deer upwind of your stand location. This means sometimes you won't be able
to hunt your favorite stand if the wind is wrong for that location. You will
need to have a good number of stands for each different wind direction. We
advise clients to map each of their stands and have a favorable wind for each
location and hunt accordingly. For example:
 In
this example: I can park along the edge of the road and sneak into my stand
using a southwest wind to blow my scent back across the road while the deer
feed in my food plot and remain unaware of my presence. I would NEVER hunt this
stand on a north wind as my scent would be blowing directly into the bedding
area ruining my hunt.
Give your stand locations and your entry and exit
strategies some thought and if you need help devising a plan for your property
don't hesitate to call us at Advance Land and Timber, LLC! |
