For die hard deer hunter’s everywhere this can be a painful time of year, the season is over and we have to live with the results of our year whether good or bad. We continually go over what went right and what went wrong and are now left with the nagging question: NOW WHAT? What can we do that is productive, help us become better hunters, while eliminating mistakes we make year after year. When the season ends the number one thing we at Advance tell our clients is to take inventory. We conduct inventory in three vital areas; deer, food sources, and stands. This week we will focus on deer.

DEER: Hopefully you have some scouting cameras, if you don’t, get some! They continue to drop in price and are a valuable management tool, not to mention a lot of fun to use. But more importantly, they help identify deer that are using your property. At Advance we focus our camera in food plots and put corn in front of the camera to concentrate deer. In most areas the rut is long gone and the bucks are back traveling in bachelor groups and you should get some bucks on camera. If you are only getting does on camera try these three things. 1.) Make sure you are putting enough corn out and don’t pile it up, scatter it out in front of the camera where it will take deer longer to finish it. 2.) Move cameras frequently to different food locations until buck sightings increase. 3.) After a rain look for big tracks crossing a road or a well used trail and keep a camera there. Time is of the essence right now because bucks will soon be dropping their antlers and you want to know what survived the season. Once you have an idea of what survived you can begin game planning on how you might hunt a specific deer next year and how you might improve your land so it will draw and hold more deer in the future. If you never get bucks on camera you may own a “gar hole” and need to call us immediately so we can either help you improve your land through better management, or sell it for you and find you a better, more productive tract.
Don’t forget to visit our website next week as we take a closer look at our 2nd inventory item, FOOD!
